What is What’s New In Libraries?
What’s New In Libraries? (WNIL) is a monthly, 30-minute cable program featuring stories about academic, public, school, and special libraries in the North Suburban Library System (NSLS). Hosted by NSLS Director Sarah Ann Long, the program was created in response to NSLS members’ requests for help in promoting their library and libraries in general.

How can WNIL benefit my library?
WNIL is an excellent image and marketing tool for NSLS libraries. Your library will be featured on cable TV. Many of the libraries we’ve visited have received positive feedback from patrons who have seen the show. Your library will also receive a DVD of the show for use at board meetings, with community groups, on the library’s Web site, or for other promotional purposes.

When does WNIL air?
WNIL premieres on Library Cable Network each month, and can be seen on over 75 cable channels throughout the NSLS area. Use the dropdown box at the top of this page to see when What's New is playing in your community.

Who can be featured on WNIL?
Any NSLS library with an interesting or unique story that can be told visually is a candidate for WNIL. Examples include:

  • An infant story time.
  • Musical performance including an interview about the performance.
  • An interesting program or service. So far we’ve done shows on job-hunting at the library, antiques, snakes, book cart drill teams and much, much more!
  • Unique online services and features on your library’s Web site.
  • Many, many more.

I have a great story for WNIL. What should I do?
It’s easy! Simply fill out a submission form.

Mary Witt, Executive Producer, will contact you to schedule a time to shoot your story.

My story is going to be featured on WNIL!!!!! What do I do now???
To coin a much-used phrase, Don’t Worry, Be Happy! The WNIL crew is well trained in working with libraries and we will make the experience painless and fun.

A few key tips:

  • Sarah Long is an excellent interviewer. She will ask you the basic who, what, when, where, how, and why questions about your story. If something is not covered in the interview, we can go back and add it.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. Think of how you like to see people on TV. Bright colors are always good. We want to show the public what they can expect when they walk into your library.
  • We will be at your location approximately one hour or less depending on the story. Please be prepared to be flexible about where we shoot the interviews. We understand that the public does not always want to be in the picture and we will show your patrons consideration and courtesy.
  • Inform appropriate library staff of the crew’s scheduled arrival time.
  • If the program features an outside presenter, please get their permission to appear on camera before the taping date.

How long will my segment be?
Each monthly program features 3 – 4 segments on different libraries. Each segment is approximately 5 – 7 minutes in length.

When will my segment air?
What's New in Libraries? functions on two different schedules. To know when your segment will air you need to know which station you will be watching and the episode number. If your community has Library Cable Network (LCN) and that is the station you will be watching, the newest episode always debuts on the third Wednesday of the month. If your community does not have LCN or you wish to watch it on a different station, the new program will debut the following month. The episode currently playing will always be listed on the main What's New page. LCN communities include: Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Skokie.

When will I receive my DVD?
After we edit your segment, we will send DVDs to everyone at your library who appeared on camera. Depending on when your segment will air, you may have to wait several weeks before you receive the tapes. We will let you know as soon as possible when your segment will air on cable TV. After you receive your DVDs, you'll receive an email message asking you to take a few minutes to complete a brief survey. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the show and your feedback is invaluable.
